ANTHROPOLOGICAL LOOK INTO YOUTUBE

the third network that started broadcasting in 1948 , which was 60 odd years ago.
if you put together the 3 networks multiplied by 60 years multiplied by 365 days a year multiplied by 24 hours a day= over 1.5 million hours of programming.
Youtube did that within 6 months of broadcasting; youtube puts out 9232 hours a day, this is the equivalent of 385 always on channels, which is also equivalent to 200000 3 minute videos(not mass media) and 88% of that is new and original programming.

Numa Numa song. in 2003 it was released it became a massive hit in italy, then in 2004 it spreads to the whole of europe, then it goes all the way to japan, where they started making animation videos to go with the song. It reached new jersey suburbs this man caled Gary made a webcam video about the song. this video was watched 600 million times by the public, it then was featured on hbc and other news programs.

youtube was luanched in april 23rd 2005, then all web based video's became easier to watch, Gary unknowingly stated a craze.

mark waslchk put a tester video on youtube, within 2 days he got 253 views, then a day afterward it got 1,154 views, the count was speeding up dramtcally without a puase. User generated organization it has been given out to everyone now it is called user generated distribution.

25% of people on youtube are aged 35+, that is the same as the amount of 12_18 year olds. 18_24 has 50% and the same 24_35. a certain domestic videowas viewed over 30 million times, then people started making remakes.

You can drag and drop audio clips and edit theese massivley. Soulja boy made his first version of his videoin april 2007 it was a massive hit with everybody around the world; in august 2007 he signed a major record label, the company actually featured youtube videos to show that it made a much bigger hit than what they have done.

community was in decline however when thay made youtube and othermedia interactuall programms, community has grown and become more independent.

Participant observation: is where you see what happens on the net , then you become involved in that act.

the classes first vlogs: a webcam is used to record yourself and let others view that vlog. it gives the person a sense of privacy in the mind of the webcammist, but it is the total opposite.

Recognition: shows people insecurities as wellas their strenght of character.

anonymity+physical distance+dialogue=hatred as public. new forms of community forms new forms of self understanding. The 'free hugs' video shows that the net has provided a community to people all over the world, also the emo guy and the girl turned into a love story, and as the equation says (hatred) their story is being twisted by other youtubers.

WEB 2.0

web 2.o is a upgraded version of web 1.o.
web 1.0 consisted of a few sites and they were only available to view, whereas the web 2.0 is much much more interactive and allows consumers to do multiple things at once.
this affects everyone because now web 2.0 allows me as a student to be able to do work and research on different platforms and allows acsess to info much more easier and faster.

In our initial brainstorming, we formulated our sense of Web 2.0 by example: Web 1.0 Web 2.0DoubleClick-->Google AdSenseOfoto-->FlickrAkamai-->BitTorrentmp3.com-->NapsterBritannica Online-->Wikipediapersonal websites-->bloggingevite-->upcoming.org and EVDBdomain name speculation-->search engine optimizationpage views-->cost per clickscreen scraping-->web servicespublishing-->participationcontent management systems-->wikisdirectories (taxonomy)-->tagging ("folksonomy")stickiness-->syndication
